The wisdom to recognize danger and bind oneself before the moment of weakness arrives. Preventive wisdom. Mythological source: Odysseus wanted to hear the Sirens' song but knew it would destroy him. He ordered his crew to bind him to the mast. He acknowledged the desire AND created a structure to survive it. Healing application: Building structures of restraint before temptation arrives. Ἰάσων Πλεονεξία (Iásōn Pleonexía) Origin: Jason — hero who used Medea for the Golden Fleece then abandoned her The psychological pattern of exploitative ingratitude. Using someone's love, sacrifice, or labor for personal gain, then discarding them when they are no longer useful. Betrayal through ambition. Mythological source: Medea betrayed her family, killed her brother, and used her magic to help Jason win the Golden Fleece. Once Jason had power and glory, he abandoned Medea for a younger princess. Healing application: Recognizing when one is being used. Understanding that gratitude is not optional — its absence creates the conditions for Medea's revenge. Μήδεια Τίσις (Mēdeia Tísis) Origin: Medea — wife of Jason, sorceress who destroyed everything in revenge The psychological pattern of revenge that consumes the avenger. When the pain of betrayal transforms into destruction that hurts the avenger as much as the target. Self-destructive vengeance. Shooting the messenger. The powerful redirect their shame onto the vulnerable who exposed it. Mythological source: Apollo's crow reported Coronis' infidelity truthfully. Apollo punished the crow (turned it black) instead of examining his own failure. Cassandra told the truth — they punished her. Marsyas played beautifully — Apollo skinned him. Roman emperors were deified upon death, then during life. The cult of personality replaces religion with ruler-worship. Ate is the divine delusion sent by the gods: the ruler cannot see what everyone else sees. Advisors are silenced or ignored. Mythological source: Agamemnon was seized by Ate when he took Briseis from Achilles, triggering the crisis of the Iliad. Ate is not stupidity — it is intelligent blindness, the inability to see what power has made invisible. Recognition: Ate cannot be cured from within.
